  1. What Does SmartFont Do?

  3. Introduction

  5. SmartFont is a utility designed to help you to work with the
  6. multitude of fonts that are now appearing in the Windows
  7. Environment. Most people have a few fonts, some people
  8. have hundreds! Trying to decide on the best font to use for a
  9. particular application can become a nightmare, and you can end
  10. up having printouts of the complete character set in every possible
  11. font. Unfortunately you still don't really know what that
  12. block-busting headline you just dreamed up will look like without
  13. experimenting, because you probably lost the printouts long ago,
  14. and does that font really look as good when it's big as when it's
  15. small?
  16.  
  17.  SmartFont's Approach
  18.  
  19. SmartFont's approach to this dilemma is to provide a small window,
  20. which can be made permanently visible if required (like Windows
  21. Help's "always on top" mode). In the window is a scrollable list
  22. of all the fonts installed on your system, each font name displayed
  23. IN ITS OWN FONT. The size of the window, and the size of each
  24. individual entry, is configurable to suit your way of working.

  26. When you need to decide on a font for a particular purpose, you
  27. can scroll up and down the list to see what fonts are available.
  28. That may be all you need to do in some cases, but perhaps you aren't
  29. sure, and there are two or three possible candidates? You can
  30. double-click on any of the font-names, and a new "viewer window"
  31. will open and will show the contents of the clipboard in that font.
  32. You can choose several fonts in this way, and a new "viewer window"
  33. will appear each time showing the content of the clipboard in that
  34. font. From the control menu on any of the "viewer windows", or from
  35. the control menu on the main SmartFont menu, you can control the
  36. placement of the windows on screen, you can cascade them or tile
  37. them, minimize them, hide them, or close them. From the control
  38. menu on any of the "viewer windows" you can request display in
  39. italics, or bold, and you can enlarge or reduce the size of the
  40. displayed fonts. Also, changing the size of any of the
  41. "viewer windows" causes the rest to follow suit.

  43. If you want to see what something else looks like in the fonts on
  44. display, simply copy something to the clipboard. SmartFont will
  45. notice that the content of the clipboard has changed, and will
  46. display its new contents. Or type something in any of the "viewer
  47. windows". All the other windows, and the clipboard itself, will
  48. follow suit!
